Step 3 – Mutuality of Purpose
Do we have a common goal in mind, namely do we share similar values, goals and objectives. Is there a ‘meeting of the minds’ as it were in how we conduct ourselves in our personal and business affairs – specifically with honesty and integrity. Do we have the same objectives,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], such as resolving an issue, eliminating a problem or being a good parent. Is there a way either we or they can help another customer or friend. In my experience acquaintances and connections do not advance to this stage because they have not let each other know how they can help each other.
1st Stage - Acquaintance
When we meet someone for the first time we want to be friendly, cordial and above all genuine. Nobody likes a phony. People today have a natural resistance to accepting anyone into their ‘circle of friends’ as Robert De Nero said in the movie Meet the Fokkers. A little kindness and spirit of friendliness never hurt any budding acquaintance. Certainly asking non-threatening questions is a great way to break the ice and serves as a starting point. Taking a real and sincere interest in the acquaintance’s answers shows you are listening,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], paying attention to what they are saying and forms a position from which any subsequent dialogues, ‘touches’ and contacts can be initiated. And it helps if you remember some defining comment the acquaintance made to you which demonstrates you found something significant and impressive about them in the initial conversation.

So if you are intent on building quality relationships then appreciate where you are in the Stages mentioned above with everyone with whom you are attempting to cultivate a relationship. Trying to move the PROCESS too quickly will probably cause indigestion from too much too fast. Give it time and let the Stages play out; in so doing both parties will have a much clearer sense of each other and how each can become a trusted person to the other. Above all abiding by the above PROCESS will assist in getting us to our goal of quality long term relationships.
It is fascinating to me that Americans are an impatient lot. The Point? I believe it is virtually impossible to jump from Stage 1 – Acquaintance to Stage 5 – Maintenance in a single contact event. It takes time and patience to build a relationship. It can’t be done in one ‘touch’. While it may take many interactions, nonetheless it can be accomplished in fewer ‘touches’ when the first three Stages occur in a short time span.
2nd Stage – Connection
There is somewhat of a quantum leap from acquaintance to connection. It requires us to be easy to communicate with and understand. At this Stage something almost surreal happens when a bond and a commonality gets identified between both parties. This could be something as simple as growing up in the same city,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], having a common friend or having worked in the same company in the past. At this Stage both parties realize they are no longer total strangers to each other,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rather they have one or many things in common.
5th Stage - Maintenance
Let’s not take our relationships for granted. A relationship can be compromised when we fail to nurture it. If we muff an opportunity that has been referred to us in a business environment the prior relationship may be in serious jeopardy. When we stay in touch with others through some mechanism such as email or social gatrherings we are in fact sustaining the relationship that has been built,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
4th Stage – Relationship
What determines if our acquaintances, connections and mutually purposeful contacts will ever mature to a relationship is based on trust. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], much more significantly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we will advance to this stage when we have achieved a level of respect that only gets established when we act and perform in a consistent manner. Consistency is the touchstone leading people to feel comfortable around us, and one of the ways they feel at ease is knowing we will be the same as last time – friendly, respectful and trustworthy. Could you count on them if a situation or opportunity arose requiring their experience, background or assistance. Those wise in the relationship building process know that a little trial or test in one area is at least an indicator of what that person would be like in a more complex situation. Frankly, if we live up to our word and conclusively show we know what we’re talking about and what we are doing, we have reached that Stage called relationship.
Consider building quality relationships as a PROCESS. Yes, think of it as a step-by-step sequence that takes time and patience with a long term goal in mind. If you think you can do it in one or two ‘touches’ you are totally delusional! It takes continuous positive experiences over time.
Ask yourself, has anyone bothered helping you understand what it takes to build and maintain a quality relationship?
Now you know why I call it “building a relationship”. It’s like building a house; you can’t put the roof on until the concrete pad is down and the walls are up. It requires us to be trustworthy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], honest,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], credible and competent. And don’t fool yourself, the test of these goes through a gestation and maturation cycle during each of the Stages.
Don’t you get a little weary listening to all the experts trumpeting,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then droning on-and-on that ‘it’s all about relationships’. It troubles me since no one has taken time to analyze what it takes in developing quality long-term relationships. It’s important because all of us in one degree or another count on relationships to sustain our life and livelihood.
Be mindful I’m not talking about winning a popularity contest. It was Abe Lincoln who said, “You can’t please all the people all the time.” However one thing you can do which influences potential relationships is to be a pleasant and polite individual.

The intercession the pilgrims experienced might be where the first "when I was a kid........" stories originated! Parents have been trying to top that story for hundreds of years--but none come close. Why?
In many respects our own history,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as well as our collective history is the same. We remember what we want to. We tell the story the way we think we heard it.
In our own way, each of us is replaying this Thanksgiving story. We say goodbye to old situations and circumstances--set sail for the "better life" and encounter hardship along the way.
I invite you to join me this Thanksgiving to practice what we know. As we commit to compassionate accountability for our selves, we will not "should" our self or feel guilty if we take a mis-step. We will simply affirm our willingness to be good receivers. Responsible containers for the good Divine Universal Source Energy is always sending. We affirm the gift of thanks is made manifest in our lives. Always.
May we be ever so humble to receive the blessings of the Universe.
May we use what we are given gratefully.
May we share what we are given lovingly.
May we all be Peace, share Peace, and receive Peace.
Unlike all of the other, "when I was a kid" stories, the Thanksgiving story puts us amidst a Universal Truth: The Mind can only serve one Master, either gratitude or despair--but not both.

The Universe always works this way. It is always willing, wanting and capable to give--"pressing down into us for good measure" what we are capable of receiving. The Universe needs us to be the kind of person capable of holding the gifts sent our way.

An Invitation for You!
If you have been "hanging-in there"; waiting for something to go wrong and fearful of your future, spend the holiday counting your blessings and then counting them again. A Universal Truth: we are only given what we can handle.
Imagine for a moment you are that pilgrim:
You realize that if you are a good student, you too can be at peace and one with your new home--just like with your new found neighbor. When the ship comes again, with fresh supplies and more people, you have your chance to return--but you know you will not be happy to return to that old survival mode in your old home. While life here may appear to be harsh--it has promise, opportunity and you now are changed: open and willing to receive the gifts of the Universe, willing to be a good student, willing to Prosper. While everything on the outside had remained the same, gratitude for what you have received has radically altered the landscape of your life.

In the midst of this you are introduced to someone who is living in the SAME place as you--yet is having a completely different experience. They are happy and healthy. They are well-fed, they prosper. The cold doesn't put them asunder and they certainly have enough to share.
You fall to your knees upon seeing the bounty of a dozen stalks of corn and a bird and some flat bread. The same food you would have turned your nose up to (we feed corn to the pigs after all) a year ago, is now the most delicious food you ever tasted. Your belly actually hurts when you eat because it was so empty--but you eat anyway--joyfully, thankfully. Giving thanks becomes important to you. You understand the "loft" of gratitude. It makes any circumstance transform. It transforms you.
What were you thinking to get in that ship anyway? Damn! You should have listened to your mother! You should have stayed on that crummy piece of dirt that you didn't own but were going to spend the rest of your life toiling on. There are many reasons to despair,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you don't know the land, and you don't know how to be successful in your hunting or farming. You KNOW you don't know. You might even be wondering for what sins is God punishing you. You might be praying to this God for relief,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for an intercession, for a miracle.
You are in a dirty, cold place. You didn't know enough about sanitation so you are infested with all kinds of critters and parasites. Your clothes are thread bare. There are holes in your shoes, and nothing much to eat. The harsh living conditions have claimed many of your loved ones and friends. You are sure that you will be following them to the grave shortly. Your mind keeps drifting back to past times when you were surviving, when life was "better".
This isn't the Thanksgiving story from my childhood. Mine was funny construction paper pilgrim hats, and Indian headbands--with enough eau de glue to make an entire class high as a kite. It was gaggles and gaggles of people, days of cooking, planned excursions into the kitchen to pilfer the desserts (they were always made first!). When it came time to eat, we each took turns expressing gratitude. I always heard the tried and true thanks for family, friends, life, and love from the adults. The children were more direct, "my new horse, my new bike, my new.....you get the drift. My grandfather used to call us kids "soft". We certainly had no idea how "hard" life could be, and we had no sense of the story of the pilgrims. How could we? We had always had plenty, never knew starvation and all of our problems were the kind you wanted to have.
If you have it good right now, be thankful! And invite others to join you, sharing in your bounty. Remember your invitation for others to join you in being a good receiver is a beautiful gift. How we wear our happiness and prosperity can be a healing balm to those in need, or a beacon of light to call others higher.
If you have been on cruise control, lying low,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], feeling good--remember we all need to take rest, because the top of one mountain is the bottom of another. I have learned there are some angels whose only job is to make certain you do not get too comfortable and miss your life. If you feel the gentle tapping of the angels, listen to it. Don't make them put a boot up your *ss.
I have a client who knew the answer to a question I asked,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but said, "I don't know". I reminded the client they did know, and not owning what you know, keeps you where you are. You know, getting more of what it is you do not want. It was hard, but they owned it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all of it. Shortly after that session I received an ecstatic phone call detailing the amount of business they had been given in the last week--more than the previous 6 months.
In my Ezine last month, I received many responses about journaling. One journal I ask my clients to keep is the gratitude journal. I am grateful to once again be reminding you of the "rising above" the state of gratitude brings. Gratitude helps us keep from playing that silly game of "telephone" in our heads. The way we keep telling our self the story of our "story", again and again.........twisting it, obscuring it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and by so doing, placing our self at the mercy of it.
If you are not where you want to be, then ask yourself, "What do I know that I am not owning? What is it I am trying to pretend I don't know?"

In her book, Learning to Think Strategically, Sloan (2006) argued that it is a myth that strategic thinking can only be learned by a few people – it is not an inborn talent, but one that can be learned and cultivated. In an intriguing article, Jacobs and Heracleous (2007) suggested that managers can improve their strategic thinking by playing games. These games involve building business models of the organization, a brand, competitors, or the industry, and so forth. According to the authors, these games offer a useful complement to conventional strategic planning processes, and help to open up and orient debate about an organization’s strategic challenges. It will be interesting to see if such strategy games can foster creative and strategic thinking in the same way that teambuilding games were expected to improve team work.
Let us begin by listing some of the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that are attributed to this competency.
Strategic thinkers:
Clearly, the type, weight, and relevance of these competency components vary greatly across industries and organizations. For example, General Electric (GE) has selected five competencies (which GE calls growth traits) to identify areas for development among their top people. The five GE growth traits are:

Is it possible to develop these competencies and, if so, how? The informal on-the-job learning methods detailed by Sloan and Goldman are clearly superior to the traditional teaching of strategy through case studies or reading about successful strategists. However, there is a lot to be said for the benefits derived from the interactive team and individual projects and exercises used in some management development programs. We at Meirc Training & Consulting design our training seminars with this interactive approach in mind. There are several off-site programs that are designed with management education and learning in mind. For instance, one such program is the IMPM (International Masters in Practicing Management) as described by Mintzberg (2004) in his book Managers Not MBAs. The program is conducted in partnership with several international business schools in six countries. It is based on the notion of learning being connected to managerial experience, and it uses Mintzberg’s five managerial mindsets: reflective, worldly, analytical, collaborative, and action mindset.
Consequently,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I believe that organizational leaders must start by smashing those barriers, tearing down the fences, throwing away the shackles and blinkers, and controlling the use of black hats. Additionally, organizations must erect radars in various parts of the globe to scan the environment for opportunities and threats. Only then should organizations invest in management training and development programs aimed at sharpening the strategic thinking competencies of those who are identified as future leaders.

* Have the desire and guts to outwit, beat, and out-run competition
* Are knowledgeable of their industry and experts in their areas of specialization
* Know their finance and risk management
* Have a bit of entrepreneurial spirit
* Are good communicators (good at asking probing questions and listening)
* Know how to inspire and lead teams.
Unfortunately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], early literature on this subject is limited. It is typically focused on management development initiatives and the learning aspects of thinking strategically without giving adequate consideration to having in place supportive organizational culture, systems, and structures (Bonn 2001, 2005). In her research on this subject, Bonn argues that strategic thinking needs to be addressed at different, but interrelated, levels: at the individual and group levels and at the organizational level. Organizations that successfully integrate strategic thinking at all three levels will create a critical core competency that forms the basis of an enduring competitive advantage. This integration at all levels, I believe, is absolutely necessary if leaders are expected to practice or cultivate their strategic thinking competencies. Otherwise, all the time, money and effort put into management developmental initiatives will simply be wasted.
Day and Schoemaker urged organizational leaders to set the tone at the top, and to systematically develop initiatives and programs throughout the organization that foster vigilance and cultivate the three qualities they identified. Therefore, organizations should first provide a culture (championed by top management and the board of directors) that supports and rewards strategic thinking instead of punishing or discouraging the behaviors and attitudes listed at the beginning of this section. Specifically, organizations ought to review their structures and systems that might act as barriers standing in the way of strategic thinking. Consider, for instance, traditional annual pay and performance reviews that focus on a predetermined checklist of traits or on individual goals and objectives; such reviews often result in poor morale, a lack of teamwork, internal competition, a lack of inter-departmental cooperation, and dysfunctional silos. Or consider the wide-spread linkage of budgets to compensation, which encourages playing games and short-term thinking to the detriment of the organization’s strategy. I feel strongly that these systems often create fences around and within the organization, act as shackles and blinkers that inhibit creative and futuristic thinking, and encourage managers to wear negative-thinking black hats (de Bono 1999). In fact, such systems encourage and reward managers to think inwardly, to strive for short-term operational efficiency rather than long-term effectiveness, and may drive managers to become more risk averse, conventional, and precedent-oriented.
* Include strategic thinking as a formal component of management development programs;
* Require executives to develop the strategic thinking of their subordinates,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych];
* Encourage early participation in strategic planning and benchmarking activities;
* Support activities that incorporate experiential learning; and maximize the benefits of strategic planning sessions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
There are, of course, several other programs and techniques specifically aimed at cultivating creativity and strategic thinking. Consider, for example, lateral thinking as advocated by Edward de Bono, or scenario planning sessions as practiced at Royal Dutch Shell Company. Notwithstanding their limitations, these developmental activities were considered effective by many academics and practitioners.
Day and Schoemaker (2008) also alerted us to the importance of corporate climate and culture in cultivating strategic thinking,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Their research discovered that “three primary qualities distinguish vigilant leaders from those striving for operational excellence. A vigilant leader:
* Imagination (viewed as an advocate of innovation; has courage to take risks on both people and ideas).
* External focus (understands customer needs, marketplace dynamics, industry trends and the competitive landscape).
* Clear thinking (specifies strategy into actions; makes decisions and communicates priorities).
* Inclusiveness (connects with teams; inspires people to want to perform at a higher level; promotes an environment that recognizes and celebrates individual and cultural differences).
* Domain expertise (gains perspective through varied experiences and build-up of skills; strives to increase knowledge with up-to-date information).

You know how important exercise is & how it effects all aspects of your life…. you’ve been thinking about it long enough & now, you’ve made up your mind – you’re going to get out there & get exercising!
Taking a stroll on level ground at a low to moderate intensity – is still better than staying home watching television,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. It is simple – but not easy to priorize the list – either by numbering them in order of importance to accomplish (for you ) as 1 to 12 or what ever number you have. Then work ONLY on the top three . When one priority goal is either finished or integrated into what you do – cross it off the list and advance the next item into the top three. Note that I said “or integrated into what you do”. By that instruction I mean certain of your goals do not end – for example bring early to all meetings or planning your day the evening prior. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when such steps are part of your daily routine cross them off the priority list and advance the next item.
You are not abandoning the rest of the list
Given enough time all your list will be addressed in the same fashion we discussed in Part 1 .
In addition to your priority few you may have a number of items you can deal quickly or in between dealing with the top three you identified . Many items – though not a priority may be accomplished quickly. As long as they can be dealt with swiftly this is a great method of accomplishing your goals.. 2) providing alternate choices and then

Evaluation
If on the other hand I simply tell you that I have concluded your issue is “ A” and your solution is to follow “ Path X” you will not have done much work to identify your own patterns and you will have done a minimum amount of thinking or experimenting on alternative patterns,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Most of us rebel to some extent when some so-called expert informs us – “ you should “ . The greatest benefit is in discovery of your own patterns and in deciding for yourself what alternatives you wish to follow. On the other hand if you recognize that in your work/ life you have made poor or unacceptable choices you are motivated to change your patterns.
