Before 24 August 2006 the word 'planet' used to mean an object that orbits a star. But on this date, after 8 days of arguing between members of the International Astronomical Union, the definition of 'planet' changed and Pluto was downgraded to being a 'dwarf planet' as it did not meet the new definition.
For an object to be a planet, it needs to meet these three requirements:
It needs to be in orbit around a star.
It needs to have enough gravity to pull itself into a spherical shape.
Its gravity needs to be strong enough to stop anything from floating around the planet.
Any object that does not meet this third requirement is considered to be a 'dwarf planet'. There are still many objects similar in size and mass to Pluto floating around in its orbit. Until Pluto eats them up or slings them away into gravity it will remain a dwarf planet.
